Haitian-born painter Marie-Denise Douyon has lived and worked in Montreal since 1991. Affected by climate change, the artist wonders about the environmental impact of overconsumption. She recovers all kinds of used objects (bicycles parts, computer circuits and picture negatives) to create her works, midway between painting and sculpture.

The Afrikecoart exhibit is presented for free at TOHU until April 17.

A native of Chicoutimi, Corno studied fine arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal and began her professional career as a painter in her early twenties. Her first exhibition was at Galerie Clarence Gagnon in Montreal. By the 80′s, she was already one of the most prized artists by collectors. Her reputation grew rapidly in the rest of Canada with shows in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver. In 1992, she moved to New York to enter the U.S. market. Her work is now exhibited in Boston, New York, Paris, London, Monaco, Venice, Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul and Dubai.

In the fall of 2010, Corno published her first book, “Cornographies, chronicle of a painter in New York” in which she recounts her journey in the Big Apple.

Marie-Ève Rochon is a fashion journalist. She co-hosts La Passerelle (French for The Runway) a weekly radio show about fashion.

Founded in 2003, the league aims to refresh the face of contemporary dance in Quebec. Its founders want to bring the public (that’s you) closer to contemporary dance, a medium which can sometimes seem exclusive. If you are unsure about going to a contemporary dance show because you believe that you will not understand everything. If you fear that the dancers will be naked on stage and it will make you uncomfortable. Imprudanses is none of that and it is for you.

Matches take the same form as regular improv games, with a referee, game settings and the public’s vote. Add a few categories that were created specifically for dance and voila! For example, the theme “shower” indicates that a dancer will perform within a circle of light. When the light is turned off, the player must stop dancing. Each game of the Imprudanses is dynamic, unpredictable and driven by the interaction with the public (but don’t worry, they won’t ask you to dance!).

Imprudanses are present at various events throughout Quebec. I personnaly discovered them at the 2010 Nuit Blanche in Montreal. The final game of regular season 2010-2011 (between the red and blue teams) will take place on Sunday, April 3rd from 5pm to 7pm at Café Campus, Montreal (18 +).  Admission is $ 8 and tickets are on sale at the door and lavitrine.com.
